  • Sport's biggest weekend

A weekend jam-packed with elite sport will have millions flipping from one event to the next - including players and prime ministers.

Julia Gillard is taking an even-handed approach to the AFL and NRL grand finals, and will attend both.

She will watch Collingwood fight for a second successive premiership at the MCG on Saturday against a Geelong team chasing its third title in five years.

Geelong coach Chris Scott is poised to make history by winning in his first year as a senior coach while his Collingwood rival Mick Malthouse hopes to bow out a winner in his last.

The prime minister will fly to Sydney for Sunday's Manly versus Warriors showdown, where her New Zealand counterpart John Key will be cheering on the Auckland team.

Mr Key's presence gives some indication of the interest rugby league has inspired in a union-mad country where the All Blacks will play a World Cup match against Canada a few hours earlier.

Sonny Bill Williams is one player who will be racing to a TV after the match to follow the fortunes of the Warriors on this side of the Tasman.

All of the World Cup big guns will be in action on the weekend, including Australia, South Africa, France, England, Scotland and Ireland.

Spring racing carnivals also dominate the weekend, beginning with Friday night's clash between super colt Sepoy and champion mare More Joyous in the Manikato Stakes at Moonee Valley.

Randwick hosts four Group One races worth $1.7 million on Saturday, headlined by the Epsom Handicap, where rags-to-riches runner Sincero will start favourite and trainer Gai Waterhouse seeks her seventh victory.

The AFL grand final has pushed racing from Saturday to Sunday at Flemington.

Genuine stayers can kick on by watching Australian hope So You Think in the Prix de L'Arc de Triomphe telecast from Paris at 1.15am (AEDT) on Monday.
